It started as a simple practice five minutes a day, repeating words that felt like a lifeline to a new version of me. At first, it was about neuroscience. I knew repetition rewires the brain, and I knew that mantras could build new pathways in the prefrontal cortex, gently interrupting old thought loops shaped by trauma and conditioning.
But what I didn’t know, and what no one warned me about, is that a mantra can also function like a spotlight… not just on who you’re becoming, but on the hidden beliefs and buried griefs that have kept that version of you at bay.
This is a story about what happens when your healing tools start talking back.
The Science of Repetition: Why Mantras Work
Let’s start with what we know.
From a neuroscientific perspective, mantras work by leveraging neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change itself. Every time we repeat a mantra, we’re activating specific neural networks. With enough repetition and emotional intensity, these networks become dominant patterns. In simple terms, the brain begins treating your mantra as a truth to uphold, redirecting energy toward this new belief while weakening the neural pathways that once reinforced limitation.
A 2016 study published in Brain and Behavior found that silent repetition of a word or phrase can deactivate the default mode network (DMN),the brain network associated with mind-wandering, self-referential thoughts, and rumination. In other words, repeating a mantra helps interrupt the noise of your inner critic and makes space for stillness.
But that’s just the beginning.

Mantras as Mirrors: The Unexpected Effect
In my own journey, I began using the mantra:
“I am allowed to have it this good.”
On the surface, it felt empowering. Like a declaration of worth. But the first morning I spoke it aloud, I didn’t feel empowered. I felt cracked open.
My eyes filled with tears. My body stiffened. And suddenly I was sobbing,a full-body grief rising up from what felt like the marrow of my bones. It caught me completely off guard.
This wasn’t just reprogramming. This was remembering.
Mantras Reveal the Inner Contracts
What I’ve come to realize is that mantras don’t just plant new beliefs, they reveal the old ones. They illuminate the subconscious agreements we didn’t know we signed.
By affirming that I was “allowed to have it this good,” my nervous system pushed back with a loud, unspoken “No, you’re not.” And in that moment, I met the seven-year-old version of myself who had internalized that joy must be earned, not received. That safety was contingent. That goodness came with guilt.
This is shadow work through sound.
The conscious mind might think it’s just repeating words, but the body, the part of us that never forgets, registers the dissonance. It says, “Something in here doesn’t match what you’re saying.” And if we’re willing to listen, the mantra becomes less of a command and more of a conversation.

The Role of the Nervous System in Mantra Work
When a mantra touches something real, it activates the autonomic nervous system.
If it affirms a belief that feels safe and supported, we feel a lift,a parasympathetic release. But if the mantra touches a wound or contradicts a long-held trauma contract, the sympathetic nervous system can surge. You might feel tension, anxiety, tears, or even numbness. These are signs that your body is trying to integrate something deeper than words.
This is why healing can feel more like deconstructing than building.
Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, in The Body Keeps the Score, reminds us that trauma is not just a memory,it’s a body state. When we bring new beliefs into that state, they don’t always slide in peacefully. Sometimes they surface the conditions that made those beliefs feel impossible.

Why This Matters for Reclamation
In my article, The Contract I Didn’t Know I Signed, I share the story of meeting my seven-year-old self, the part of me who had unknowingly entered into invisible agreements designed to ensure emotional survival. Agreements like “Stay small so you don’t upset anyone.” or “Don’t shine too brightly or you’ll lose connection.” These contracts weren’t conscious choices. They were silent pacts with safety, born out of necessity, not freedom.
Mantras don’t just plant new beliefs over these old ones. They stir them up. They challenge the internal scaffolding that once kept us alive but now keeps us constrained. A mantra can function like a spiritual subpoena, calling forth the outdated agreements that have been running silently in the background, dictating what we believe we’re allowed to have, be, or experience.
When we speak a truth the younger parts of us don’t yet believe, we’re not simply affirming a new idea,we’re creating friction inside the psyche. We’re inviting a confrontation between two powerful forces: the part of us ready to evolve into greater wholeness, and the part of us still clinging to survival strategies learned long before we had language for them.
This confrontation is sacred, and is the gateway to true reclamation.
Because you cannot reclaim your full power without meeting the parts of you that once had to give it away to survive. And you cannot embody your highest frequency without tending to the parts that were conditioned to shrink, to hide, or to hustle for love.
The tension that arises when a mantra touches a hidden wound isn’t the sign that something is wrong,it’s the proof that something vital is waking up.
Healing, at its core, isn’t about bypassing these old agreements. It’s about seeing them clearly, grieving their cost, and consciously choosing to release them. Only then can the words you’re speaking become not just intellectual affirmations, but embodied, vibrational truths.
The mantra becomes a living, breathing portal, not just to the future you desire, but to the parts of you that have been waiting decades to come home.

How to Work With Mantras As a Portal
If you’re using mantras, here’s what I want you to know:
1. Don’t override the resistance, get curious about it.
If a mantra brings up discomfort, pause. Ask: Which part of me doesn’t believe this yet? Meet that part. Let it speak. Use tools like shadow integration work, or parts work.
2. Bring the body into the process.
Mantras are more powerful when embodied. Walk with them. Move with them. Breathe them into your fascia. Use your voice, especially if your power was silenced in childhood. Vibration moves energy. Let it move you.
3. Write the opposite belief down.
For every mantra, there’s often a hidden contract beneath it. If your mantra is, “I am safe to be seen,” the buried belief might be, “Visibility is dangerous.” Name it. Witness it. It’s not your truth, but it was your survival.
4. Use the moment of resistance as an opening.
That ache? That sadness? That anger? That’s not the mantra failing. That’s the mantra succeeding. It’s touching the very thing that’s in the way. And your job isn’t to fix it,it’s to feel it.

Mantras as Invitations to Wholeness
The deeper invitation of mantra work isn’t to become someone new,it’s to remember the version of you that’s already whole, already radiant, but buried beneath years of programming, survival strategies, and inherited narratives.
Mantras are not just affirmations, they’re activations. Every repetition serves as both a signal and a summons. You’re signaling to the brain, “This is what we’re choosing now,” while simultaneously summoning the parts of you that still don’t believe it’s safe to choose that. In this way, mantras become sacred friction. They don’t just soothe, they stir.
Each phrase,“I am worthy,” “I am allowed to receive,” “I am safe to be seen”,does more than create new neural connections. It peels back a layer of protection. It confronts the deeper emotional architecture that was built in moments when those truths were not available. And in doing so, mantras become not just tools for change, but catalysts for remembrance.
This is why the selection of your mantra matters.
You’re not just choosing words, you’re choosing a frequency to align with. A good mantra vibrates at the level of the life you want to live. But here’s the paradox: the right mantra will also disrupt you. It will challenge the internal status quo. Because the frequency of liberation is uncomfortable to the parts of you that were trained to equate love with sacrifice, safety with silence, or value with performance.
So the art is in choosing a mantra that holds both energies:
– It feels like truth in your future self’s body
– And it disrupts the internal agreements that keep your current self stuck
This isn’t a contradiction. It’s the calibration process.
When you find that phrase, that line of language that both softens your heart and rattles your bones, you’re holding the frequency of transformation. Your nervous system might twitch. Old stories may surface. You might cry. You might rage. That doesn’t mean the mantra isn’t working. It means it is.
A powerful mantra will never just confirm your current identity. It will stretch it. It will surface the shadow. And it will walk you straight into the parts of you that are ready to be reclaimed.
So don’t look for the mantra that simply sounds good. Look for the one that wakes something up. The one that vibrates like a memory you forgot was yours. The one that makes you pause, because it’s finally within reach.
That’s the one that will take you home.
Ready to Find Your True Frequency?
If choosing a mantra feels challenging,or if you find yourself resisting the ones you wish you could believe, there’s nothing wrong with you. It often means there are deeper parts of you that need to be witnessed first. Parts that made silent agreements long ago to stay small, stay safe, or stay unseen.
This isn’t something you have to navigate alone.
In a discovery call, we’ll explore what your system is truly ready for,not just at the surface, but at the soul level. Together, we’ll identify the hidden patterns asking to be honored, healed, and integrated, so that the words you speak aren’t just hopeful affirmations, but living, breathing truths you feel from the inside out.
If you’re ready to find the mantra, and the self, you’re truly meant to embody, I invite you to schedule a discovery call with me.
