Fear is Faith in Evil Instead of Good: The Alchemy of Choosing Trust Over Terror

Florence Scovel Shinn, a metaphysical teacher ahead of her time, left behind a body of work that has guided millions in mastering the invisible forces that shape reality. Among her most arresting statements is this one:

“Fear is faith in evil instead of good.”

It’s a simple sentence; easy to skim past, but when you actually sit with it, it hits differently. For me, it was like someone flipped on a light in a dark corner of my mind.

Suddenly, I saw the connection: whatever I believe in, I will experience. If I’m rehearsing or anticipating all the ‘bad things’ that could happen, or replaying the ones I think are happening, I’m placing my faith in something I don’t want to align with.

I could feel the pattern—the automatic looping of “bad” outcomes firing from a network of well-worn synapses, conditioned and reinforced for over 40 years. That was the wake-up. I’ve been unconsciously using my energy to affirm a reality I would never consciously choose.

Let’s get into it.

What Is Fear, Really?

Most people think of fear as an emotion; something that shows up when danger is near. But fear isn’t just a reaction. It’s a perspective. A lens. And a faith system.

Florence nailed it: fear is not neutral. It’s not just the absence of faith; it is a form of faith. But it’s faith in the wrong source. It’s faith in things like struggle, destruction, separation, and disconnect. It’s the conviction that something outside of you, something darker, more powerful, more punishing, is going to win.

When we fear loss, we are believing in lack. When we fear betrayal, we are believing in abandonment. When we fear failure, we are believing in unworthiness.

Fear is a creative energy: subtle, persuasive, and powerful. Left unchecked, it doesn’t just react to life, it starts writing the script for what happens next.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

We live in a world that sells fear like candy. News cycles, social media algorithms, and marketing funnels all monetize fear-based attention. They hook you with the illusion that being “informed” or “prepared” requires being perpetually anxious.

But here’s the hard truth: fear-based consciousness is expensive.

Fear narrows your focus. It shuts down your creative thinking, puts your nervous system into high alert, and makes you more reactive and less discerning. It drains your energy, clouds your decisions, and worst of all, it collapses timelines of possibility into tunnels of limitation.

And here’s the deeper truth: being in a fearful state makes you easier to control.

Not just by people, but by your own internal systems, and unexamined stories and outdated survival patterns that have never been fully integrated. In that state, you’re more likely to follow orders (internally or externally) than to follow your intuition. It makes you more likely to comply than create, and more likely to shrink than lead.

That’s why fear is the currency of control.

And if you’re walking a spiritual path, building a business, or leading a movement, you simply can’t afford to let uninvestigated fear run the show.

You have to ask yourself:
Where have I placed my energy of faith?
What outcomes am I energizing through my attention, my rituals, my internal dialogue?

Because the universe isn’t listening to your words, it’s listening and responding to the energy you consistently invest in.

Faith as a Creative Technology

Let’s flip the script.

Faith isn’t just about religion or blind hope. In metaphysical terms, faith is a creative technology. It’s the process of energizing an idea/thought/feeling until it becomes a reality.

Faith is attention, amplified by aligned emotion, sustained over time.

That’s what makes both fear and faith powerful. They use the same mechanics, only with radically different consequences.

  • Fear is faith in collapse.
  • Faith is fear transmuted into creative alignment.

If you believe that life is always conspiring in your favor, fear loses its leverage. And not because you’re naïve, but because you understand something deeper: that even the hard moments are raw material for expansion.

The Ontology of Fear

When fear shows up, I’ve learned to ask myself a deeper question: Who am I being right now? What state of being am I actually embodying?

When we’re afraid, we’re not just feeling a momentary emotion. We’re embodying a collapsed identity. The fearful self is smaller, contracted, cut off from Source, and desperately trying to survive.

That self doesn’t create or call in miracles. That self doesn’t innovate or magnetize or heal. That version of ourselves is looping in scarcity.

To shift from fear to faith, you don’t need to “think better thoughts.” You need to become a different frequency. A truer version of you who knows that you are the field, and you are the Source. You are not asking the Universe for a favor, you are activating the universe within as a co-creative energy.

Your Fear is Not an Enemy, It’s a Messenger

Let’s be real.

You’re not going to banish fear; that would be a spiritual bypass. Fear is part of your human design and human systems—It’s instinctual. And in truth, it has served you. There’s wisdom in fear because it often emerges to protect something precious.

But here’s the shift: stop treating fear as a dictator, and start treating it like a messenger. A part of you that’s asking to be brought into the conversation.

One of the most powerful tools I use in my coaching is parts work—acknowledging and integrating the many inner “selves” that live within us. And fear is often the voice of an exiled part; one that believes if you fail, you’ll be unloved. If you succeed, you’ll be alone. If you shine too brightly, you’ll be punished.

When you bring that voice into the light, meet it with presence, and introduce it to a higher truth… everything begins to shift.

The Shift: From Fear Frequency to Creator Frequency

Here’s a practical way to alchemize fear when it shows up:
Name it honestly.
What is the actual story your fear is telling you? Don’t sugarcoat it. Bring it into full light.

Ask: “What am I placing my faith in right now?”
This is your moment of deep honesty with yourself. What outcome are you energizing through belief?

Feel the cost.
What does that fearful belief cost you energetically, emotionally, financially? Make it undeniable.

Invoke the opposite polarity.
What would it feel like to place your faith in good instead? In support, ease, or connection? Anchor in that state, viscerally.

Speak it into the field.
Declare the new faith. Use sound, word, and ritual to recode the pattern. Speak it into water. Write it on your mirror. Turn it into a daily command.
This is not just positive thinking, it’s a vibrational type of leadership and self-initiation.

Your Fear Reveals Your Potential

Here’s a reframe that might just shift something for you:

The more intense the fear, the more powerful the potential it’s protecting.

Fear doesn’t always show up as an enemy. Sometimes, it’s the bodyguard of your next breakthrough. It’s like the dragon guarding your treasure—not because it wants to destroy you, but because your nervous system hasn’t yet felt safe enough to hold what’s on the other side.

That next level of visibility, wealth, intimacy, or power? It’s not just a mindset shift—it’s a capacity shift.

So the work is to become the version of you who can stand in front of the dragon… and stay.
Breathe, hold steady, and expand, even while trembling.

The fear isn’t a stop sign, it’s a mirror asking, “Can you hold what you say you want without collapsing back into who you used to be?

When you learn to stay with your fear; not fix it, not shame it, not bypass it, you build something priceless: energetic capacity.

Capacity to stay in your body, to tolerate uncertainty, to be seen, challenged, celebrated, and stretched. And in that capacity, the fear alchemizes. It becomes clarity, action, and a creative force, and often, what emerges on the other side… is the most aligned, expressed version of you.

Faith in Business, Money, and the Marketplace

Let’s bring this into the realm of business.

If you’re building something meaningful (especially in today’s wacky world) you’re going to meet fear at every level:

  • Can I really charge this?
  • Will anyone say yes?
  • What if I scale and then lose it all?
  • What if I’m not enough?

Each one of these fears is faith in failure.

But when you recognize fear as a sign that you’re on the edge of expansion, you begin to rewire the default. Instead of shrinking, you lean in. You ask:

If I were already living as the version of me who has it all, what would that version do right now?

You make moves from your aligned self, not your survival self, and the results are radically different.

Florence Scovel Shinn quote on fear and faith

Florence’s Legacy: Invisible Forces, Visible Results

Florence Scovel Shinn taught that words are wands. That what we speak, internally or externally, creates our world. Her quote about fear being faith in evil is not just philosophical; it’s mechanical. It describes how the invisible molds the visible.

This is quantum law, and spiritual technology.

You are either aligning your field with the architecture of divine support—or with the architecture of collapse.

You are either funding “heaven”, or underwriting “hell”.

Every thought. Every choice. Every belief.

You Are the Tuning Fork

You are not a victim of fear. You are the one who tunes the field. You are the gatekeeper of how you use your faith, and you have the responsibility to choose your source.

Fear is persuasive. But you are sovereign.

So the next time fear sings a familiar song, pause and ask:

“What am I putting my faith in right now, and who am I choosing to be?”

Then choose again.

Because the moment you realign with truth, that life is for you, not against you, you become unstoppable, and in that moment, as Florence would say, “Your word is your wand.” Wield it with faith in good.
